(source) This Center of Military History recommended Professional Reading List is divided into four sub-lists, each targeted to a particular level of experience and responsibility, from private to lieutenant to general. The readings provide a progressive course of study that will help prepare any soldier for his or her next level of responsibility. The books complement materials used in the Army educational system and will help bridge the intervals between periods of formal instruction at Army schools. While intended for independent study, you can also use the list as the basis for establishing book clubs, discussion groups, and other professional development activities. In our opinion there is no better way to learn the military art than to read history. In this we are seconded by no less than General George S. Patton, Jr. who wrote to his son, then a cadet at West Point, "to be a soldier, you must know history." This Professional Reading List is no more than an introduction to the many books worth reading on Army heritage and military history. Their selection also does not imply that the U.S. Army Center of Military History endorses the authors' views or interpretations. Nevertheless, these books contain thought- provoking ideas and information relevant for our dynamic Army today and it is our hope that soldiers use them as a springboard for additional reading, study, and contemplation.
